Wandsworth Council Achieves Top Ofsted Rating as New Conservative Administration Takes Office

Wandsworth Council has achieved the highest possible rating from Ofsted across all areas of its children's services, the watchdog confirmed in May 2026. The inspection, conducted in March, found that children benefit from "highly responsive and compassionate social work that is firmly centred on their individual experiences."

Outstanding Inspection Result

The Ofsted report rated the council's children's services as "outstanding" in every assessed category, a rare achievement for any local authority. Inspectors highlighted "a firmly established culture of reflection, learning and professional curiosity" and praised "the dedication and expertise of frontline practitioners, managers and partner agencies."

The rating comes as the council undergoes a significant political transition following the local elections on 8 May 2026, which saw the Conservative Party become the largest party on the council.

New Leadership Team

Councillor Aled Richards-Jones was named Leader-Elect following the election results, with a Conservative-led administration set to take office. Speaking after the Ofsted announcement, Councillor Richards-Jones said: "We are committed to building on these strong foundations and ensuring every child and family continues to receive the high-quality support, care and opportunity they deserve."

The council has also appointed a new Mayor for the 2026/27 municipal year. Councillor Emmeline Owens, who represents Southfields ward and has lived in Wandsworth for 20 years, was elected Mayor on 29 May 2026. She has served as Chairman of Governors at a Wandsworth state school for the past decade. Councillor Kirsten Botting of Trinity Ward, a resident for more than 35 years and Chair of the Tooting Bec Safer Neighbourhood Team, will serve as Deputy Mayor.

Mayoral Charities

Mayor Owens has selected three local charities to support during her term: Wandsworth Home Start, which provides support to parents with young children; Sound Minds, a mental health charity that uses arts and music; and the Battersea Crime Prevention Panel, which focuses on youth crime prevention initiatives.

A new Youth Mayor team has also been elected. Abigail Akindeko will serve as Youth Mayor and Afeefa Haroon as Deputy Youth Mayor, both taking office on 29 May 2026. The pair have pledged to amplify young voices in the borough.

Community Engagement Initiatives

The council has announced several community initiatives taking place this summer. Wandsworth in Bloom 2026 opened for entries on 26 May, inviting residents, schools, businesses and community groups to participate in efforts to "make Wandsworth more vibrant and biodiverse."

The borough is also participating in the London Festival of Architecture 2026, with Wandsworth Town featuring as one of ten neighbourhood programmes throughout June. Additionally, the council has confirmed a series of events to mark Pride Month.

Residents wishing to host street parties for Clean Air Day will have council fees waived, the local authority announced on 24 May 2026. The Employ Wandsworth jobs fair, held on 26 May, attracted over 1,200 attendees; the highest attendance figure recorded for the event.

Local Biodiversity

Separately, the council reported that tawny owls are among 4,000 species recorded in Wandsworth. The finding was published on 20 May 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to track local wildlife.
